FZ-G2 TOUGHBOOK 2-in-1 Rugged Laptop
The Panasonic TOUGHBOOK family introduced the 2-in-1 rugged laptop form factor with the CF-20. Marrying a rugged tablet to a rugged keyboard and allowing the user to dock and undock at will, the 2-in-1 form factor quickly grew to be the most popular TOUGHBOOK model. The CF-20 was eventually replaced with the FZ-G2 which optimized some quality of life improvements and maximized the utility of the rugged laptop. FZ-G2 Keyboard Options
While there are different language models of keyboard, the two main keyboard options for an FZ-G2 user are Emissive and Rubber keyboards. Both keyboards for the FZ-G2 are fully compatible with the TOUGHBOOK G2 tablet portion as well as accessories built for the computer. TOUGHBOOK G2 and TOUGHBOOK 20 (CF-20) vehicle docks as well as desktop docks are both compatible with the G2 keyboards and offer increased utility and efficiency.
FZ-G2 Emissive Keyboard
The TOUGHBOOK G2 Emissive Keyboard (Part number FZ-VEKG21LM can be purchased here) is built to compliment the rugged nature of the FZ-G2 while providing a tactile and comfortable typing experience. Each chiclet key on the FZ-VEKG21LM has a tactile responsive nature when pressed. When docked with the FZ-G2, the keyboard provides a handle for easy carrying which doubles as a kickstand which helps users interact with the tablet without pushing it over. The FZ-VEKG21LM provides users with additional interface ports including both another USB-A and USB-C port when operated with the tablet (see below.)
FZ-G2 Rubber Keyboard
The TOUGHBOOK G2 Rubber Keyboard (Part number FZ-VEKG21RM can be purchased here) features an 81-key membrane keyboard which is rated as IP65. With the Ingress Protection rating, the FZ-VEKG21RM can withstand dust, rain, jets of water and beyond. The firm latching mechanism on the keyboard ensures that the FZ-G2 seats safely and securely when docked and features clear indicators.
FZ-G2 Rubber Vs Emissive Keyboard
While both the FZ-VEKG21RM and FZ-VEKG21LM are fully rugged and compatible with the FZ-G2, certain use case scenarios might be optimal for one or the other. The rubber keyboard features a seamless membrane material over the entire set of keys making it ideal for environments where frequent cleaning might have to take place. While the emissive keyboard is fully rugged, sand or other materials might fall between the keys and be difficult to clean out. Conversely, the FZ-G2 emissive keyboard (FZ-VEKG21LM) provides an easier typing experience with more tactile feedback from the keys. While both keyboards are color selectable backlit with 4 different levels of brightness, the nature of the emissive keyboard allows it to achieve more light output than the rubber keyboard (see below.)
